More that just advice...
For most people maintaining a healthy weight is a struggle. It is estimated that 75% of adults in the US are overweight or obese. Health care providers routinely advise their overweight patients to improve their diet by eating more whole foods, avoid refined foods, and increase their level of physical activity.
This is great medical advice. If practiced correctly, a healthy whole foods diet combined with moderate physical activity can result in significant weight loss, as well as improved physical and mental health.
We face a conundrum. Although the advice is on-target and the patients are willing - this advice does not significantly help patients lose weight. So why doesn’t this medical advice translate into weight loss for patients?
Researchers at Duke University recently discovered that weight loss advice which does not include specific instructions about nutrition and exercise is often ineffective. This study revealed that when weight-loss patients were encouraged to seek the assistance of a nutrition and wellness coach, they lost more weight than someone who was only given the generic advice to "eat better and exercise more."
